Chapter 6: Subtle Movements
It wasn’t until the warm porridge settled in Gu Yundong’s stomach that she let out a satisfied sigh.
This body is in such bad condition. Even though she didn’t eat very well during the apocalypse, she had the advantage of having space and collecting a lot of supplies early on. Even now, though she’s not as free as she was before the end of the world, she’s still better off than most people. It’s not a problem for her to eat until she’s 70% full.
But here, even before escaping the famine, the porridge is watery and there are hardly any grains of rice. After escaping the famine, they only have one meal a day, and it’s rare to be able to eat until they’re full.
“Sister, it’s delicious and fragrant,” Gu Yunshu drank his porridge slowly. He had never tasted such delicious porridge before.
His expression was filled with delight, his cheeks bulging, and he was reluctant to swallow.
Mr. Yang couldn’t wait and took two sips before carefully feeding Gu Yunke.
The little girl was weak. After she drank the porridge, her eyes brightened a bit, her eyes crinkling at the corners, and she suddenly became more energetic. “It’s delicious.”
At that moment, Gu Yundong felt a sense of satisfaction.
This feeling was very unfamiliar to her, so she couldn’t help but place her hand on her chest.
It was a rare occasion for the family of four to have a ‘sumptuous’ dinner. They were all extremely happy and lay on the ground, clutching their full bellies, not wanting to move.
Gu Yundong’s stomach was no longer burning, and she finally had the strength to think about the next path.
Now they have enough food, and she has enough supplies in her space to fully support them on their journey to the relatively prosperous city. The only problem is transportation, and the journey is bound to be slow.
Other things can be considered, but the biggest worry is encountering pirates and starving refugees. This is the biggest danger on the road.
Especially since their family doesn’t even have an adult man, they are easy targets for bullying in the eyes of others, and they can easily become the target of those with ulterior motives.
It seems that they can no longer take the regular roads, at least not to places with a large population. Before they left home, Gu Dajiang told her about the routes and directions of several nearby prefectures and cities, so she had some idea.
Speaking of Gu Dajiang, she didn’t know whether he was alive or dead now, or where he was.
Gu Yunshu also missed his father, especially after a good meal. His little hand couldn’t help but wipe his eyes, raising his head and trying hard not to let his tears fall.
As Gu Yundong turned her head, she was slightly startled to see him, as if his head had been cut off.
She quickly coughed and said, “It’s getting late, let’s rest early.”
She had the three of them lie down on the kang, and she took out the thin quilt from the basket to cover them. They brought it from home, and Mr. Yang kept it in the back basket on his body. In addition to the little girl Gu Yunke, there was a thin quilt, two clothes, and a bamboo tube for water. There was nothing else in the back basket.
Gu Yunshu lay down and realized that his eldest sister wasn’t joining them, so he sat up hurriedly. “Eldest sister, aren’t you going to sleep?”
“I slept a lot during the day, but I can’t sleep now, so go to sleep.”
“Oh.”
Gu Yunshu nodded and laid back down peacefully.
After eating and drinking, they fell asleep quickly. After a while, their breathing became steady.
Gu Yundong sat down beside them, not planning to sleep at all. In the apocalypse, as long as you spend the night outside, you always need someone on watch, or else you’ll never know when danger will strike.
She had developed this habit, even in this place.
Fortunately, she was alert that night.
It had only been half an hour since Yang and the others fell asleep when she heard a slight noise outside.
