Chapter 11: Arrival at Qing’an Prefecture
Gu Yunke licked her lips savoringly before swallowing, recalling the taste.
Gu Yundong was taken aback. She hadn’t expected the little girl to clearly remember the taste, thinking she’d been too dazed to know.
She knew she had to concoct a tale to satisfy her sister’s curiosity.
However, before Gu Yundong could speak, the little girl obediently asked, “Sister, what delicious food did you dream of last night?”
Gu Yundong smiled gently and said, “I didn’t dream of any food, sweet girl. But tonight, if you dream of that delicious sugary drink again, will you share it with me in your dream? I’d love to join you.”
Gu Yunshu, eager to join in, took his sister’s hand, “Yes, let’s dream of it together and have a taste. Maybe we can even dream of eating meat.”
Gu Yunke nodded energetically, her eyes sparkling like crescent moons, “Sure, we’ll share it, along with Mother and Big Sister. It’s so tasty, especially when we dream of meat.”
Gu Yundong, amused by their innocence, simply shook her head.
Wiping the sleep from her eyes, Gu Yundong sat up as Gu Yunshu hurried over, “Big sister, are you up?”
“What time is it now?” she asked.
“Si Shi,” her brother replied, which means it was nearing nine o’clock in the morning.
Realizing time had flown, she asked, “Why do we have pancakes and steamed buns?”
“The neighbors gifted them to us last night after I helped them with something. I saved them for us to eat today,” she explained, instructing them to prepare for departure.
Since no one else could be relied upon to keep watch at night, Gu Yundong had taken it upon herself. They had to make do with sleeping in shifts, resulting in less travel time during the day.
Packing a small bag with rice and buns, Gu Yundong carried it along with Gu Yunke on her back, sharing the burden with Yang. Gu Yunshu’s young frame wasn’t suited for long walks, so they’d alternate carrying him whenever necessary.
Fed and somewhat rested, the family of four continued their journey, looking far better than the day before—hope was restored.
They wandered through less crowded areas, but the sight of their small party still a*****d greed in some onlookers. Gu Yundong was ready with a dagger smeared with blood as a warning, her fierce smile keeping many at bay.
Inevitably, there were still those who tempted fate. Yet, Gu Yundong’s ruthless defense ensured they weren’t bothered again.
Despite living in the wild at times, Gu Yundong remained vigilant. Gu Yunshu noticed her sleepless nights and wanted to help, but she refused, knowing the risks and valuing the safety of their lives above all.
After a month marred by hardship, they finally reached Qing’an Prefecture, a milestone in their journey.
