The Eldest Sister Has Space: Chapter 17: gotta get out of here

Chapter 17: Gotta Get Out of Here

“Master, are you not leaving?” Gu Yundong had initially planned to find a way into the city, but now it seemed that wouldn’t be possible.

She might be capable of protecting herself, but her three companions, including Gu Yunshu, were not.

It looks like their only option would be to wait outside the city gates for a maximum of two days. If there was no word from Father Gu by then, they’d have to depart.

The old man gazed up at the sky and said, “I wish I could leave, but I ran out of food on my journey here. I still had some porridge to drink two days ago. Today… I’m not sure if my son will be able to find any wild vegetables. I’m hungry, but it doesn’t really matter to me. My wife has already passed away, and I’m just an old man with a few years left. A bit of disorder won’t make much difference to me.”

Only then did Gu Yundong learn that the old man and his family had fled their hometown, and his wife and daughter-in-law had died of starvation, trying to save the last bites for him. Now, only he, his son, and his sixteen-year-old grandson remained.

His son and grandson were currently out scavenging for food, but it was getting late, and they had yet to return. She worried whether they had failed to find anything.

“Girl, if you can leave, then go. Don’t you see? So many people here are just waiting to die. Yet, most are holding out hope for chaos to ensue. If turmoil breaks out and the city gates open up, they can enter the city. There might be food inside, and they won’t starve to death.”

Everyone was at their wits’ end, willing to risk their lives on the slim chance of survival.

Gu Yundong fell into a long silence before she took the Yang family to one side and sat down.

After a moment, she turned to meet Gu Yunshu’s puzzled gaze and said softly, “Yunshu, let’s wait one more day. Regardless of whether we receive any news from Dad, we must leave.”

“…Because there’s going to be a fight here?” he asked, recalling the old man’s words.

“Right.”

Gu Yunshu lowered his head, appearing dejected, and fiercely wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.

Eventually, he said with a choked voice, “I’ll listen to whatever big sister says.”

“You’re doing well.”

“I know we’re still young and can’t run fast. If a fight breaks out, we’ll only slow big sister down. So let’s not linger here, and instead, continue our search for Dad, alright?”

Gu Yunshu was incredibly sensible. Gu Yundong had seen her share of unruly children, like Fu Lanzhi who was several years older than Gu Yunshu but had a terrible character.

In contrast, Gu Yunshu’s sensibility and good behavior tugged at her heart, making her want to dote on him, a feeling she had never experienced before. However, since spending time with the Gu siblings, this emotion had begun to surface frequently.

These two children had a way of getting under her skin.

She took a deep breath before nodding to Gu Yunshu, “Okay, big sister promises you.”

Gu Yunshu forced a smile, “I’ll grow up soon.”

Meanwhile, little Gu Yunke, still quite young, found the conversation between her older sister and brother too complex to grasp. Confused, she tilted her head and asked innocently, “Aren’t we looking for Dad? But Coco is really hungry.”

Wasn’t it said that finding their father would mean they could eat?

Gu Yundong pinched her little sister’s cheek affectionately. Coco was a true food-lover, happy to eat just about anything given to her. She even dreamt about food at night.

She pondered how, when they had lived with the Gu family previously, Mr. Zhao never provided enough food. How had the little one managed to cope?

Gu Yundong grabbed another bamboo tube, removed the lid, and stealthily brought it to Gu Yunke’s lips, shielding it from the others’ view, “If you’re hungry, drink some water. Tomorrow, your big sister will find a way to get us some food, okay?”

The bamboo tube was claimed to contain water, yet inside was porridge. There weren’t many grains of rice, but it was enough to fill one’s stomach.

Having sweetened the porridge, Gu Yundong watched as the little girl’s face lit up with joy upon tasting it.

The Eldest Sister Has Space

Having traveled from the end of the world to ancient times, Gu Yun Dong barely had time to catch her breath before she found herself on the run.
Her family was driven out of the fleeing clan by her grandparents, with everyone else just watching coldly. Her father was missing, her mother was foolish, her little radish-headed siblings were skinny and big-headed, and Gu Yun Dong, who was on her last breath, just felt a toothache.
There was no choice but to roll up her sleeves and get to work. Doing business, opening shops, buying good farmland, Gu Yun Dong’s life was thriving. If there weren’t people around her coveting and wanting to marry her, she could even reach the sky
