Hidden corner Chapter :- 2

Chapter 2: Confusion Part 2

The baseball bat froze, hanging in mid-air.

Li Chengyi’s eyes widened in shock as he took in his surroundings, unsure of how to react.

Before him lay a broad, dim parking lot.

The square, empty space had not a single car in sight, resembling a sealed long box illuminated only by the dim light.

The lights were a ghastly white, of two varieties.

One, on the right side, stretched into the darkness far ahead, a long strip fixed to the black ceiling.

The other, on the left, were foot-long segment lights spaced about ten meters apart along the ceiling, each following the other into the distant gloom.

The somewhat reflective black ground lightly gleamed under the light, revealing some blurred white parking lines.

‘What the hell? Is this a dream?’ Li Chengyi gently set down the bat and pinched his thigh hard.

The sharp pain quickly spread through his body, instantly waking him up.

‘It doesn’t seem like a dream.’ He quickly came to realization.

With even transmigration happening, any bizarre occurrence seemed normal now.

He took a deep breath, inhaling and exhaling, which slightly calmed his facial expression.

Standing at the entrance, he paused.

‘First, confirm whether this is a dream.’

Picking up the baseball bat, he examined its texture closely, almost bringing it to his face.

The bat’s surface had tiny, smooth rust spots, and its silver paint reflected the distant lights.

Embossed in the middle was a scroll-like pattern with a line of small characters: Life is in the beating.

Below the characters was the brand name: Vital Sports. Further below were two neat characters representing the company.

‘Dreams aren’t this detailed and delicate!’

Li Chengyi felt a chill down his spine, gripped the anti-slip handle of the bat tightly, and the dense texture convinced him once again this was not a dream.

Usually, according to his experience, checking details was enough to tell if it was a dream.

Details in dreams are often blurry.

Now, standing at the entrance and taking a deep breath, he didn’t want to step outside.

Subconsciously, he stepped back, wishing to retreat into his room and close the door.

‘Maybe closing and reopening the door would revert everything back to normal.’

As he thought this, his back hit a cold wall.

‘!!!’ Li Chengyi froze and quickly turned to look.

The bedroom behind him had at some point turned into a grey-white wall!

The room, gone!

His bedroom, gone!

Holding the bat, wearing grey pajamas, he stood there, dumbstruck by what had occurred.

The room was gone.

Even the door frame was gone.

Behind him was a wall identical to the other walls of the stone.

If not for the bat he held, he might have thought his earlier time in the room was an illusion.

Touching the wall in front of him, the hard, cold feel and the coarse texture all told him the wall was real.

There were even some tiny damages, as if something sharp had hit it, revealing a layer of darker material beneath.

‘What in the world is going on here!?’

Li Chengyi was utterly bewildered.

He turned back to face the parking lot, took a deep breath.

After hesitating and pausing for a short while, his expression gradually became stoic, and his eyes rapidly changed.

Soon, he took a long breath and stepped forward.

The world around Li Chengyi spun, his vision blurred momentarily, and he felt as if he were floating.

The piercing sound of an alarm clock vibrated in his ears.

Li Chengyi’s vision gradually returned.

The parking lot he saw turned into the white ceiling of his bedroom.

Metal panels fit together to form the ceiling’s simple pattern – white squares outlined by black lines, typical of his home’s decor.

He sat up in bed, stunned, as his bedside phone vibrated slightly.

It was an alarm set for ‘exercise.’

The time was 7:32 a.m.

Breathing deeply, Li Chengyi felt his heart still racing.

The scenes he just experienced were so vivid he hadn’t yet come back to reality.

He sat on the bed waiting for his blood flow to slow down, then picked up his phone amidst the alarm’s ringing.

The phone’s wallpaper was of deep blue sea water with three young people lying on a round inflatable mattress, all wearing red life jackets.

Their hands supported their heads, and all three were smiling happily.

Golden sunlight, a grey inflatable mattress, red life jackets, and the trio’s beaming smiles formed a warm picture in the center of the deep blue sea.

Holding the phone, Li Chengyi stared at the background photo, pausing for a while as fragmented memories surged in his mind.

‘Lin Sang, Chen Xudong.’

He recalled the names of the other two besides himself.

A girl named Lin Sang and a sturdy boy named Chen Xudong.

This was taken during their trip to Bisha Islands by the Blue Ocean two years ago when they hired a drone to capture it.

Putting down the phone, he examined its appearance.

It was a simple rectangle silver box, not much different from phones in his previous life.

All-screen, no button.

He set the phone aside, got out of bed, walked to the window, moved aside some hanging coats, and opened it.

The cool breeze brought a whiff of fried eggs to his nose.

The light outside was bright, his window on the fourth floor overlooked rows of colorful cars.

Across was another grey-white building, more than ten stories high, where he could see families beginning to stir in between the floors.

Li Chengyi turned to look at the more distant sky.

In the azure heavens, wisps of hazy clouds floated, now shading, now revealing specks of gold.

He steadied himself, walked to his desk, and pulled a well-polished mirror from the drawer.

He looked at himself in the mirror.

Reflected was an ordinary, slightly pale young man with dark eyes.

His eyebrows were thin, and his eyes slightly uplifted, seemingly always smiling. Apart from that, there was nothing memorable.

His nose was neither high nor low, his mouth neither wide nor thin.

He appeared to be in his twenties, curious and slightly shocked.

‘Seems no different from my previous life?’

This thought flickered through Li Chengyi’s mind.

According to the original owner’s habit, he should now dress and go out for physical training.

Though memories were vague, many things were familiar.

He quickly picked a set of grey sportswear from the closet, dressed, and left his room for the living room.

The living room was empty; his parents and sister were already gone, and a few pairs of shoes were missing from the entrance shoe cabinet.

On the gray rectangular stone table lay a box that looked like jelly.

Li Chengyi approached, picked it up, and looked at it.

The box read: Silver Ear and Mung Bean Porridge – Guding Brand.

Hesitating, he opened the lid and drank it.

It tasted sweet, no different from what he had in his previous life.

After quickly finishing breakfast, changing shoes, and grabbing his sports waist bag,

Li Chengyi reviewed his fuzzy memories, took his phone and keys, and left his home.

Inside the bright, airy stairwell, the silver elevator moved faster than he anticipated.

It felt like only four seconds after pressing the button, and he was already on the ground floor.

Leaving the stairwell, stepping outside the building, the moment his feet touched the hard, grey ground, Li Chengyi felt grounded.

Standing at the entrance, the warm breeze, carrying scents of flowers and breakfast, revitalized him.

Ding ding.

Suddenly, a bicycle bell rang from across the building.

An old man with salt-and-pepper hair was helping his granddaughter onto the bike’s rear seat. With a few steps, he mounted the bike and rode off with his granddaughter to school.

The girl, not yet ten, yawned, her eyes still teary, one cheek showing a handprint.

Li Chengyi, warming up his ankles, watched them gradually disappear into the distance.

With a couple of light jumps, he followed the direction of the bike towards the exit of the Bliss Community, where his routine workout spot, a small park on the side, was located.

Inside the community, cars passed by, all heading to work or school.

The rustling of leaves and branches interspersed with faint yellow particles, perhaps flower petals or fluffy seeds.

Following the road, Li Chengyi ran out of the community. He paused by a large stone with “Bliss Community” inscribed on it, then continued towards the park.

Fresh air, comfortable temperature, bright sunlight, clean streets.

The bustling streets with people heading to work, sending kids to school, and others exercising early in the morning.

All these concrete sensations stabilized Li Chengyi’s unsettled emotions.

He traced the familiar route to the park entrance, pausing by a circular clearing, waiting.

His exercise partners were the two people from his phone’s background picture: Lin Sang and Chen Xudong.

Five days a week, they came here for their morning workouts.

Li Chengyi felt a mix of anticipation and nervousness. Everything in this world was new to him.

His predecessor’s relationships and past were familiar yet foreign to him.

As he pondered how to interact with his two friends, the unsettling dream from the previous night receded into the background.

He had a faint sense of belonging, as if this was the real him, and his past life was merely an incredibly vivid dream.

But this feeling quickly faded.

Because to his right, someone was jogging towards him.

“Xiao Yi!” The person called out from afar, running with a standard posture.

Tall and sturdy, over 1.9 meters, with a crew cut and bulging muscles, wearing a black shirt and grey-white sports pants, thick eyebrows, big eyes, and a noticeable red mole on the left of his brow – it was Li Chengyi’s friend and classmate, Chen Xudong.
