I Became The Villain The Hero Is Obsessed With: Chapter 27 Part 2

However, Chae-hyun couldn’t finish her sentence.
It was because Haru’s expression was alarmingly rigid.
“…..”
She stood with her lips sealed, staring intently at the place they had fled from.
Her mind was already cluttered to bursting.
There was an unwritten rule for heroes.
‘Do not engage in action without avoiding detection.’
This was true even in the past when there were no techniques to impair recognition.
Never, ever take off your mask.
Before heroes began appearing publicly without masks, all of the past ‘heroes’ wore them.
Once their identity was revealed, a terrible life began.
A principle unanimously adopted by all hero associations around the world.
No matter what terrible terror unfolds, if your face is revealed, do not step forward.
Heroes are incredibly valuable.
Especially the powerful ones.

Decades ago, a few people suddenly developed abilities.
These were dubbed superpowers, or in other terms, extraordinary abilities.
There have been numerous debates about why such powers suddenly appeared amongst humanity, yet nothing has been conclusively revealed.
There are theories that these traits have always been in the genes but only manifest in certain individuals, theories involving cosmic magnetic fields, or even that they were gifts from a deity…
Those who were born with powers, or developed them later in life, broadly fall into three categories.
First, the type who just live a relatively normal life.
In fact, most fall into this category. Many have a middle-class temperament, and most superhumans have powers that aren’t especially useful.
For example, the ability to reverse the growth of plants. Besides putting a nursery out of business, there isn’t much use for it. A strong stomach. You can digest anything, but what does one do with that? Even people with this ability prefer chicken to eating rocks.
In short, most just blend into society and live their lives.
For them, superpowers are little more than party tricks to show off at gatherings.
Even those with strong powers often live ordinary lives. Why have super strength and become a hero just because of it? The nation doesn’t force it. Even those with super strength may want to be artists, photographers, office workers, or designers. They, too, live quite ordinarily.

However, those who are somewhat strong and possess a sense of justice choose to be heroes. They just need to go to the Hero Association, take the power test, and register.
But, heroes are few and far between. Many who test their powers with grand aspirations cannot accept the truth that they are merely B or C grade. They question why, despite having the same powers, a villain is ranked A while they are B, only to receive the bureaucratic answer that the hero grading system is stricter than the villain grading system.
The standards are designed so that only those with rare dual abilities or extremely powerful ones can be graded A. S grade is reserved for those who can do things like stop time. Just being strong doesn’t cut it for anything beyond a B grade.
Add to that the fact that being a hero is a grueling role akin to a soldier in constant battle, and most give up partway through, even with the offer of hefty compensation.
Furthermore, given the public’s stringent expectations of heroes’ moral integrity and the backlash they face from any flaws in South Korea, the proportion of heroes is much lower compared to other nations.

Despite their scarcity, there are countless villains.
The reason is simple. Those with strong abilities often choose the path of a villain.
In truth, the proportion of villains that actively terrorize the public is quite small, which also contributes to the notoriety of the egotistic.
Many villains quietly pursue their own gains from the shadows.
And usually, they are not known to the public, operating clandestinely and concealing their identities.
But if a hero’s identity is exposed?
They immediately step forward to eliminate the hero since heroes are seen as potential threats and they hope to dispose of them swiftly.
So, a hero must never reveal their face. That’s common sense.

Common sense, but…
Does that mean these suffering citizens should just be left alone?
“STARDUST!!!!!!!”
Boom-. Boom-.
The sound of collapsing buildings.
The screams of people.
Should all this be abandoned?
Heading to the Hero Association now to deal with identity concealment would take too much time. By the time she returned, it is highly likely the situation would be over.
Is this why she herself chose to become a hero, to run away from situations like this?
“Haru…?”
Her expression solidified as she planted her feet firmly. Yes, there’s no choice.
For the sake of the citizens, rather than her own safety.

Just as she was about to leave, a man looking at his smartphone shouted out.
“It’s Egotistic!! Egotistic is here!!!”
For a moment, she almost lost her footing.
No, why would that guy suddenly show up here?
