The Eldest Sister Has Space: Chapter 8: kill

Chapter 8: The Kill

With a swift “whoosh,” the crossbow bolt shot towards a man’s throat with lightning speed, penetrating his neck and pinning it to the ground with a solid ‘thud’. The man had no time to react; eyes wide open in shock, he struggled to breathe, emitting a ‘gurgling’ sound, before finally collapsing to the ground, his face frozen in a grimace of unwillingness.

Breathing out, Gu Yundong cautiously picked up her crossbow and proceeded inward.

Just as she took a couple of steps, the sound of hurried footsteps came from inside the house.

Gu Yundong paused in her tracks, with the crossbow now aimed at the door.

Shortly after, a man stumbled out, one hand clutching his arm while blood seeped through his fingers. Panic was written all over his face. As he made his way to the courtyard, intending to alert his accomplice, he turned his head to find his compatriot already on the ground, life slipping away.

To Gu Yundong’s surprise, she readied another crossbow bolt, but before she could take aim, another man emerged from the room.

This new figure, dressed in practical attire, emanated a chilling aura and wielded a sword, from which droplets of blood were slowly descending.

He spotted Gu Yundong standing there. Then, turning to see his fallen adversary, he understood the situation and nodded in gratitude. “Thank you,” he acknowledged.

Gu Yundong was taken aback. So there had been people in that room? And it appeared one of them was a skilled fighter.

The defeated intruder knelt on the ground, filled with despair. “Spare my life, I was blinded by my greed and didn’t recognize your greatness. I am a despicable man; please let me go. I was driven by hunger in this harsh world… please…”

Before he could finish pleading, the swordsman swiftly brought down his blade, slicing through the air and the man’s neck.

The intruder’s final gasp was cut short, as he fell silent, dead upon the ground.

While the two vile men lay lifeless, Gu Yundong remained vigilant, assessing the man before her and the unfolding situation.

Then, from the room darted another figure, small and no more than five or six years old.

“Uncle Gao, Brother Bai is awake, come quickly,” a soft, juvenile voice called out as the child rushed out, clung to the man’s leg, lifting his head to speak.

Gao Feng instantly shielded the child’s eyes to spare him the sight of the two deceased intruders. His previously cold and stern demeanor melted into tenderness. “Understood. Go back in, don’t let your sister come out. Tell Brother Bai I’ll be there shortly; I just need to deal with something here.”

“Okay.” The boy nodded earnestly, was turned around by Gao Feng, and scampered back inside.

He had not even noticed Gu Yundong, who was standing in the yard.

Gu Yundong’s expression was one of shock—wrong assumption! The two wretched attackers were not after her family of four; rather, they targeted another family in the courtyard, also with two children. Indeed, these men had previously described a pale, delicate child, which did not fit the description of her skinny younger brother and sister.

Gu Yundong quickly regained her composure, stowed away her crossbow, and addressed Gao Feng with a grave tone. “There’s no need for thanks. I overheard their conversation and knew they were up to no good, planning harm on those two innocent children. Anyone with a shred of conscience would not stand by idly; I followed them, hoping I might be of some assistance.”
