The Whispering Verses :- Chapter Fourteen: Four Elements

The two went up to the second floor, which was also covered in dust. They didn’t go up to the third floor and instead looked down the corridor. On one side of the corridor were windows, and on the other side was a row of rooms. The main building of the sanatorium was U-shaped, and they were in the central part of the long side.

The doctor said:

“[Miracle], if you can inscribe a [Miracle] spirit rune, it will definitely be a golden spirit rune. All [Miracles] come from the stories and power of the gods. Remember, the Five Great Righteous Gods are the only remaining benevolent gods.”

“Only remaining?”

Shard Hamilton grasped the main point and understood why he had encountered [Miracles] for the first time.

“Yes, in past epochs, there were many gods. If you join the academy, this part will be covered in the basic theology courses. But most of the powerful gods have since disappeared, fallen, left, or been sealed. Only five benevolent gods remain and are called Righteous Gods. The gods can interfere in the material world and are not just symbolic. Do not think of them as powerful ring warlocks; they are truly higher-dimensional beings. I hope you understand what I mean.”

Shard’s mouth twitched. He certainly understood.

“The ring warlocks of the Righteous God Church mostly specialize in [Miracle] elements. But aside from the Righteous Gods, traces of the old gods remain in the world. By understanding those traces and knowing the stories of old gods—with the help of ‘the other self’—you can also extract [Miracle] spirit runes.”

The doctor finally mentioned the essential “voice in the head” for ring warlocks.

“The voice in your head is actually another you. It is not your true self, but it is indeed you.”

The doctor reiterated this concept, and Shard heard a woman’s laughter in his mind again.

“This is the [Miracle] spirit rune I inscribed when I was at the first ring.”

The white mist appeared behind the doctor once again, and part of the brass fate ring revealed a golden spirit rune.

Shard endured the pain at his temples and deciphered the rune, which meant [Dust]; he had seen it once before.

“The old god, [The God of Dust], also known as [The Serpent of the Dust], left behind this miracle. I learned its story through the academy, thus acquiring the spirit rune.”

The golden light shone on the ground in front of them, and a series of footprints appeared:

“But I am not well-suited to this miracle and have only developed a simple magic. The power derived from spirit runes is called magic, while the general power used by ring warlocks is called incantations. This will be introduced in the course.”

The two followed the footprints forward, indicating the target was on the second floor.

“But remember, gods are dangerous. It’s not that they bear malice towards humans; it’s that their existence itself is too high. Any contact with information related to gods may cause harm due to the oppressive nature of the gods. Just like how looking directly at the sun damages the eyes.”

The doctor reminded him and then continued:

“[Blasphemy], if you can inscribe a [Blasphemy] spirit rune, it will definitely be a silver spirit rune. All [Blasphemy] comes from filthy concepts and evil gods. But remember, they are not the Five Great Righteous Gods, nor the vanished old gods—the corrupt gods still exist.”

The remaining gods from ancient times include a few evil gods aside from the Five Great Righteous Gods. These gods are relatively weaker, born from concepts and blasphemy. They are true gods, recognized by the Righteous God Church. However, their power is significantly weaker than the Righteous Gods.

This is not the self-praise of the Righteous God Church, but a fact.”

“Do you mean the Righteous Gods are acknowledged and powerful benevolent gods, while the old gods consist of vanished benevolent and malevolent gods as well as existing evil gods? Are evil gods particularly terrifying?”

Shard summarized.

“Of course they are terrifying. Though weaker than the Righteous Gods, even knowing their power would drive ordinary people insane. The church’s main task is to suppress the occasionally appearing evil gods and the perpetually emerging cultists. [Blasphemy] spirit runes are not rejected; apart from evil gods, some knowledge from the Fourth Epoch can also extract [Blasphemy]. Secret books record these terrifying stories. This mainstream extraction method begins with [Blasphemy]. Both [Miracle] and [Blasphemy] are necessarily related to gods.”

Currently, it’s the Sixth Epoch, though no books or calendars record this, only keeping track of years. But Shard knows this is the Sixth Epoch because the voice in his head mentioned it the first time it appeared.

This seemed to further indicate its uniqueness.

“It is now the Sixth Epoch, while the Fourth Epoch was one of darkness and chaos, exceptionally horrifying,” the doctor whispered, as if fearing to disturb some presence. From the thick fog behind him, silver spirit runes flashed, again revealing only part of the fate ring. Shard interpreted the beautiful rune as [Emotion].

“[Emotion], a quite powerful spirit rune, originates from a terrible story of the Fourth Epoch. Even now, I cannot forget it. I developed multiple magic spells from this element, with the simplest being to detect emotionally-charged beings nearby.”

Silver light flickered on the brass fate ring, and the doctor found the answer:

“He’s inside and is terrified. It looks like he knows we’re here.”

The enemy couldn’t possibly be unaware, as the doctor made no effort to hide his voice.

“If the voice in your head continually warns you of nearby [Blasphemy], don’t think, just turn around and run immediately. This element is highly lethal.”

The doctor continued to impart basic knowledge as they moved forward. Shard understood why he hadn’t yet encountered [Blasphemy].

“[Enlightenment], if you can inscribe an [Enlightenment] spirit rune, it will definitely be a bronze spirit rune. All [Enlightenment] comes from civilization itself. Yes, civilization—historical legends, religions, hero stories, and even fictional knight adventure novels—through certain mediums, can all extract [Enlightenment]. It is a symbol of civilization, representing the light of our world.”

Although it sounded easy, it certainly wasn’t as simple as reading knight novels.

The flash Shard observed upon arriving in this world was a result of encountering the [Enlightenment] element at his doorstep.

“Moreover, it isn’t just our civilization, not even just human civilization. Past epochs’ civilizations can also do this. [Enlightenment] can coexist with [Blasphemy] and [Miracle] since the history of civilization cannot lack the power of gods, and gods have never turned their sight away from civilization.”

In the fog behind the doctor, a part of the fate ring revealed itself again, and the bronze rune [Beautiful Dream] emerged:

“This is the [Beautiful Dream] spirit rune. It’s inconvenient to explain its origin now. My compatibility with it is very good. I am going to use a magic spell to put the other party to sleep.”

With a slight glow, Shard couldn’t see the exact effect, but trusted the doctor wouldn’t fail.

They finally stopped advancing and turned into an unmarked room. The room was clean but showed no sign of occupancy.

The doctor calmly said:

“Lastly, there is [Whispers]. If you can inscribe a [Whispers] spirit rune, it will definitely be a black iron spirit rune. [Whispers] come from a wide range of sources. The common view is that if [Enlightenment] is the light of civilization, then [Whispers] is the darkness of the world. [Whispers] almost exist as a natural phenomenon, permeating the entire material world and can be gained through contact with evil god knowledge and [Relics].”

The detective died from a certain [Relic], which was why Shard encountered the [Whispers] element at the time of his death.

A black iron rune appeared, its meaning being [False Reality], the most complex of the four spirit runes the doctor had demonstrated.

“This spirit rune was obtained a year ago during the resolution of a Keeper-level, that is, Level 3 [Relic] event. Though I don’t fully understand its power, I primarily use it to dispel illusions.”

Under the glow of the black iron rune, the clean room gradually revealed its true nature. Newspapers and wooden boards sealed up the drafty windows. The floor and walls were smeared with a layer of bloody plasma, exuding a foul odor. The floor was littered with glass containers holding human organs, arranged as if a macabre exhibition was being held.

After the disguise evaporated, the smell of blood assailed them. Shard’s stomach churned, finally understanding why the doctor insisted he skip breakfast.

Suppressing the intense discomfort and mental pressure, Shard’s eyes scanned the nearly blood-red room and spotted a sleeping young man in the corner.

He didn’t look like a vagrant but more like a student—his clothes clean, appearance refined, and attire proper. One hand held a gun, and the other held a bronze box, slumped there.

“Byrd Morod, 19 years old, a student at Tobesk City’s Lorax Institute of Mechanics. A year ago, he accidentally came into contact with a Level 5, that is, Poet-level [Relic], and was driven mad by [Whispers] within it. This led to a gradual transformation in his personality, eventually turning into a kidnapper and murderer of young women. This world is simply too dangerous for ordinary people.”

“What exactly are [Relics]?”

Suppressing his fear of the scene, maintaining his composure against the urge to vomit, Shard asked. The doctor, surprisingly unflustered, might have been concealing his emotions well or had seen similar scenes many times. They remained at the room’s entrance, neither intending to step inside.

“[Relics] are remnants of the past, cursed items from the previous five epochs, some naturally formed, and others created by powerful ancient beings.

Remember, only from the previous five epochs can [Relics] be birthed. So far, no records of Sixth Epoch [Relics] have been found. But if you find one, it might cover an entire year’s worth of practical credits. [Relics] are easily distinguishable from other alchemical items; only they can contain [Whispers] elements. There’s no way to artificially endow an object with [Whispers] elements.”

Both looked at the metal box in young Morod’s hands—it was the [Relic].
