The Whispering Verses :- Chapter Twenty-Three: The Time Traveler

The moment the consciousness formed in the life ring, it seemed to fly into the sky like in a dream, seeing the entire world and touching the veins of the world. Compared to an individual soul, the vast world is incredibly profound, terrifying, and enormous.

But before he could see anything, he immediately returned to his body, making Shard, who was sitting on the sofa, aware of what he was doing.

No need to look back; the meaning of the two spiritual runes is automatically known. These two runes represent the soul’s qualities and the world’s recognition of existence, which will not lie.

“The core rune located at the very center of the life ring can only be the brass-colored [Enlightenment] rune, at least for ordinary humans, because the strongest power of humans is civilization, and there’s nothing special about themselves.

But for believers favored by gods, depending on the god’s faction, it’s possible to obtain the golden [Miracle] or silver [Blasphemy] core spiritual runes when taking office; these people are usually called the chosen ones or holy sons. And through some special and imperfect process, using the power of [Relic] to become ring magicians, it’s possible to obtain the black iron [Whispers] spiritual rune, but this has great hidden dangers for the soul.”

The doctor explained in his low voice, gradually pulling Shard back to reality.

Since Shard had completed his job change, Ms. Dorothy regained her right to speak and added:

“Of course, there are other exceptions, like ancestral inherited powers, but that has nothing to do with us ordinary people.”

Shard nodded. Seeing him looking at the two of them, Dr. Schneider signaled Shard to take a sip of tea:

“Your complexion is not good, which is normal. The forging of the life ring is the soul deforming, and feeling pain is very normal. It takes a few days of rest to alleviate it. I didn’t feel anything at the time, but that night I couldn’t sleep due to the pain, as if someone was hitting a gas pipe in my head.”

Although Shard didn’t feel in a bad state, he still obediently picked up the teacup as instructed by the doctor, letting the warm steam hit his face:

“So Mr. Schneider, Ms. Dorothy, the number of core runes…”

Due to the voice in his mind, the outsider didn’t dare to easily determine whether he was normal, so he didn’t dare to confirm the number of normal core spiritual runes.

Shard was trying hard to suppress the joy of successfully contacting the mystery, but maintained basic rationality and vigilance. He had already earned their trust and couldn’t show his abnormality.

The doctor showed an expression of “I knew you would ask this”:

“Core spiritual runes are generally within three, but according to the college’s data, over eighty percent have two. After all, a soul can’t have just one outstanding trait, but there are also special cases. The highest record was around the beginning of the sixth Epoch, in the year 306 of the general calendar, when a ring magician with seven core spiritual runes appeared in the Zaras College of Literature.”

Shard no longer needed to pretend; he genuinely showed a surprised expression:

“What level of ring magician did that person eventually become?”

The blonde writer lady shrugged:

“Unknown, that person was just a minor figure in history and didn’t even have a precisely recorded name. Oh, I see what you mean, but the number of core runes doesn’t have much to do with the level of achievement. The doctor is a common example.”

The doctor then showed his complete life ring again, with two brass-colored spiritual runes [Light of Mind] [Dream] at the center.

“I’ll translate this, it’s Dream and Light of Mind. Generally speaking, the simpler the concept, the more meanings can be interpreted, and the more the thaumaturgy can be developed and created comprehensively, making it stronger. So, personally, I think [Dream] is stronger.”

Because the spiritual runes use an ancient language, the doctor also translated it, not knowing Shard could decipher it at a glance.

“I have three, but it’s not very special either.”

As she spoke, white steam fog appeared behind Ms. Dorothy. Accompanied by the press of a giant hammer, a spinning brass-colored circular ring with a square cross-section appeared, with three core spiritual runes [Writer] [Roleplay] [Another Princess] on it.

She explained the meanings of the three core runes and believed that “Writer” was her best core rune, matching well with her profession as a writer. Ms. Dorothy excelled in the brass-colored [Enlightenment] element, adept at finding power in stories and legends.

“The language used for spiritual runes is from an ancient Epoch. If you can’t find a translation method, you can only ask the possessor of the spiritual rune, as the possessor automatically understands the meaning of the runes. So Shard, what are your spiritual runes?”

The doctor and the writer actively displayed their power, also to reassure Shard and imply that there was no need to hide. After all, core spiritual runes relate to the college and major after enrollment.

“Time and Space, Silver Moon.”

Shard thought for a moment, thinking there was no need to hide this. After saying the two words, he indeed saw Dr. Schneider and Ms. Dorothy show surprised expressions. He couldn’t say he was slightly complacent, but he at least felt happy.

“They are both quite broad concepts, which is good. Regarding [Silver Moon], the academy has many records, and [Silver Moon] can easily be developed into various new thaumaturgies. This spiritual rune is quite rare but not niche. [Time and Space], are you sure it’s [Time and Space] and not [Time] or [Space]?”

The doctor stretched his neck to confirm.

Shard nodded. Although he hadn’t encountered the trope of breaking the test crystal ball due to high talent, his talent was obviously not ordinary. Shard controlled his emotions, showing just the right amount of curiosity, rather than deeper thoughts, as these two core spiritual runes seemed to have some coincidence.

Especially [Silver Moon].

“Don’t laugh.”

He said in his mind.

“Has [Time and Space] never appeared before?”

He asked, while the doctor and writer lady exchanged glances before the latter explained:

“Of course it has, but it is exceptionally rare, extremely rare. The number of recorded cases of individuals possessing this core rune doesn’t exceed five. And those who obtained the [Time and Space] spiritual rune after taking office by contacting the mysterious and ancient knowledge didn’t exceed 100 in history.”

The doctor hesitated as he looked at Shard:

“If it was just [Silver Moon], we would recommend you join the College of Mathematics, where you could become a thaumaturgy expert and spellmaster. But since it’s [Time and Space], you will definitely choose the College of History, becoming an investigator, joining the team exploring time, uncovering past secrets.

Even if I don’t recommend it, the professors of the College of History would never let you join other colleges. There’s no one more suited for this profession than someone with [Time and Space]. As you step into the past’s timeline, you will face more dangers, but you will also learn more secrets about the fallen Old Gods.”
