Prologue of a Hardworking Pay-to-Win Knight
Prologue: The Misfit
I often wondered.
If I had been born during the Three Kingdoms era.
I could have become a being like Guan Yu.
I could have become a legendary figure like Zhang Fei, Heo Hyeok, Zhao Yun, or Lu Bu, shaking the world with my presence.
However, regrettably.
I was born in the peaceful modern society.
“That brat! That brat hit my son! Look at his face, all messed up! This kind of sc*m should be sent to prison and made to eat jail food.”
When I was in elementary school, I beat up middle schoolers. In middle school, I beat up high schoolers, and by high school, I had gained a notorious reputation—not as a hunter of bullies.
Gangsters who strut about showing off their strength and even those backed by large corporations were unable to act up in front of me.
Especially after that time in the second year of high school when I single-handedly took down forty gang members after setting a trap, even the big shots usually full of themselves couldn’t muster up the courage to speak in my presence.
Eventually, after being released from the police station without any charges, my acquaintance from the combat police, big brother Se-Min, called out to me.
“Hey! General!”
“Please, don’t call me that.”
“Then what else should I call a general if not general? Misfit?”
Tsk, tsk.
I clenched my fist, trembling with irritation, but I held back. No matter what, I wasn’t foolish enough to challenge a member of the combat police. Combat police, who can summon Gigas—a war machine capable of fighting—have reached a professional level of combat ability. No ordinary person could face them in battle, no matter how well they fought.
“Why do you live so strenuously? You could have let this go… You got off this time, but it’s only because you’re a minor. Things won’t always go this way.”
“So you’re saying I should just roll over and beg?”
“That’s not what I meant. Dude! Sigh… You don’t get it. There’s nothing to gain from this.”
“Why isn’t there anything left for me?”
Although I knew he was worried about me, I grumbled in response. Because in front of the police station…
“Brother! I was worried about you!”
“See! I told you I was innocent! It was self-defense!”
“Jae-Yeon Oppa~! Congratulations on getting out!”
“You dimwit, this isn’t a release from prison!”
My friends in the police station parking lot cheered and welcomed me.
I laughed.
“You see, I have friends.”
“…Well.”
Big brother Se-Min smiled bitterly, but I didn’t grasp the meaning behind that smile.
As I continued high school.
“Ah, I’m sorry! I have to go to my academy class.”
And graduated.
“Too bad. We won’t see each other often now.”
“Well, Jae-Yeon wasn’t really the studying type anyway.”
“But still, Jae-Yeon will do well in anything!”
And went to college.
“Ah, what the. Is that guy a gangster? Why aren’t you calling the police instead of fighting there?”
“Unfortunately, with these grades, I can’t go to the National Police University.”
And then.
“Transfer to the military academy? I’m sorry, but they don’t take rebels like you.”
“It was all acquitted.”
“Tsk, tsk. Do you really think being acquitted means there won’t be any record?”
And then.
“Your Qi sense is too weak. With these levels, you won’t be able to transgress the beginner’s stage of any special abilities. Shouldn’t you have realized this from an early age and studied or learned a craft?”
“Ah, I’m sorry. With these grades, it’s difficult.”
“Who are you glaring at? Are you a gangster?”
After becoming an adult and entering society.
“I apologize.”
“It will be difficult.”
– Thank you for applying to our company. We have seriously considered the possibility of working with you, Han Jae-Yeon, but regretfully we must inform you that it won’t be possible this time.
And then.
Finally.
I understood what big brother Se-Min had said.
I am not a hero who is admired and loved by everyone. I am certainly not a powerful figure that even gangsters look down upon. Nor am I a good son or a proud friend.
Just a misfit.
With an excessive self-esteem, I failed to become a part of society.
