Episode 6
Knowing all along, Nox asked.
“Where is Khalid?”
“He’s not that kind of person….”
At Maeta’s words, Nox inwardly laughed bitterly. Yes, Khalid is not that kind of person. However, Nox was determined to make him into that kind of person from now on.
“Why do you judge that on your own?”
“What?”
Maeta looked flustered. She knew well that Nox cherished Khalid. Nox slowly descended the stairs. He saw servants gathered together. They were murmuring and looking at the center of the hall.
“The young master has arrived…!”
Upon someone’s small shout, the servants cleared a path. At the end of the path, Nox spotted Khalid, kneeling in the middle of the hall. Lady’s maid pointed at the child, gesturing with her finger. Her voice resonated throughout the hall, loud and clangorous.
“I saw that child stealing Madam’s brooch!”
Mother came out for the first time in a long time, standing tall with her back straight. Her face was pale, but her neatly arranged hair was perfect. Father was by her side, trying to read her mood. Ha, a hollow laughter escaped. Father could never beat mother. Even in a situation like this.
“N-No, I didn’t! I didn’t steal it!”
Khalid refuted. The child was held by the servants and on his knees on the floor. In an instant, Khalid looked at Nox. Nox momentarily lowered his gaze to the floor, unable to meet those pitiful eyes.
“I took the brooch from this child’s hand! That’s a lie!”
The maid raised her hand high, showing the blue brooch. The brooch, with a gold frame containing a blue gem, looked more valuable than anything else. Khalid called out to Nox with a pitiful look in his eyes, trying to make eye contact. However, Nox did not look into the child’s eyes. Khalid’s trembling voice sensed something ominous.
“You…you asked me to bring, bring, run an errand for you. To get, get Madam’s brooch. Isn’t that right?”
Nox remained silent. Or rather, it would be more accurate to say he couldn’t say anything. His throat closed up. Regret for being able to do this to a child. Doubt about whether this was the best way to send him away from the mansion. Then the reasoning that crept in.
He pursed his lips several times. And then, he finally let out those words.
“…I, I haven’t asked him to do such an errand before.”
The words came out disjointedly. After Nox spit out those words, he involuntarily clenched his teeth. Khalid’s eyes widened as if they were about to tear. He struggled to free himself from the hands of the servants holding him and called out to Nox with a trembling voice.
“You, you…my lord…!”
Nox forcibly turned his head away. If the child is expelled like this, I’ll have to find another servant and send them to another family. I can just find a way to deal with them separately. Young Nox believed that everything would go his way.
However, Nox overlooked something. Olga’s gaze that was observing Nox and Khalid, as well as her condition that became more sensitive due to her illness. Olga looked down at the child with a grim face and delivered a cold verdict.
“For daring to lay hands on the master’s belongings, and for making excuses of another master.”
Nox was engulfed by tension without realizing it, at his mother’s voice that chilled down. He had a premonition that something was going wrong.
“By using a whip made of entwined thorns, a hundred lashes will be given, and he will be expelled from the family.”
“Mother!”
Nox immediately called out to Olga. His pupils couldn’t focus and were shaking.
“That is too severe a punishment.”
“Too severe?”
Olga’s pupils glowed with anger and madness.
“For daring to steal the master’s belongings and making excuses, it’s too severe to say that.”
“He’s still just a child. It’s enough to be expelled from the family….”
“Son.”
With a calm voice, Olga called him.
“I know that child is your servant.”
