One Day I Became a Hatchling: Chapter 8

‘Huek!’

Plop.

Exhausted of all his energy, he knelt on the floor.

‘Did I… defeat it?’

Gasping for breath, he regained his composure and stared at the egg he just touched with his forepaw.

Crack. Splinter.

Success.

From the moment he applied force through his palm acting as a trigger, the egg’s surface began to crack.

‘I did it! My power is indeed the strongest!’

The cracks spread slowly but surely.

Smiling slyly, Ryongi sat cross-legged and placed the egg in the space between his legs.

‘To withstand this, it’s just an egg but it’s impressive.’

Just as Ryongi was about to peel the eggshell to replenish his strength, which he had exhausted.

Snap!

“Screeeech-!”

“Kyuuu?”

‘Huh?’

The eggshell popped up and a white bird’s head emerged, bumping into Ryongi’s finger.

“Chirp. Chirp! Cheep cheep cheep cheep.”

“Kyu…u?”

‘What is this…?’

Ryongi was half out of his mind.

A feeling of soft, fluffy white feathers brushed his forepaw.

“Chirp! Cheep!”

The bird lifted its white face and opened its eyes.

Yellow pupils embedded in white feathers met Ryongi’s red eyes.

‘A bird?’

More of the shell broke away, revealing small white wings fluttering.

“Chirp! Cheep!”

‘What is this? Why is there a bird here?!’

Ryongi, who was staring blankly at the bird, finally came to his senses.

‘Wait a second… Why is this alive? It was a roasted egg, wasn’t it? Moreover, what’s with this energy I feel from it?’

Upon examining the bird, Ryongi was even more astonished with his mouth agape.

‘It’s infused with the energy of fire and even my power!’

Every time he tried to break the egg, it felt like his power was being nullified, but in reality, it was absorbing all of his strength.

The fact that it hadn’t been roasted by the Red Dragon’s fire was certainly due to it absorbing all that energy.

‘Then, all the power I’ve built up until now… has gone into this thing…?’

Plop.

Realizing the fact, all his strength drained away in despair.

He could barely support himself by resting one forepaw on the side and letting his body sag.

‘What a waste… Really, it’s ridiculously wasteful.’

His small body trembled with rage.

Meanwhile, the baby bird had completely emerged from its shell and approached him, half-collapsed.

“Cheep. Cheep.”

‘What are you saying?’

When he lifted his dazed eyes to look at the bird, it looked like a little white chick and rubbed its beak affectionately against the top of Ryongi’s forepaw.

“Cheep. Cheep.”

Seeing the chick approaching and leaning against him affectionately, a thought flashed through his mind.

‘Could it be… imprinting?’

Some creatures instinctively regard the first being they see upon birth as their mother and follow them blindly.

Considering that it had absorbed his power, it wouldn’t be strange to feel like kin.

‘Come to think of it, some divine beasts that are born have similar traits.’

He stood up and started walking, leaving the chick behind.

Naturally, the chick followed him with tiny steps.

Whether he moved left or right, or even made circles, the chick trotted earnestly behind him.

‘Ridiculous.’

Taking a sigh in the air, he shook his head.

“Cheep! Chirp!”

Waving the small white wings with glowing eyes, it fluttered as if asking for praise.

‘Ugh. So bothersome.’

Having used up all his strength and energy unexpectedly because of this little one, he desperately needed rest.

Ryongi spread his small wings and flew towards the cradle.

“Cheep! Chirp chirp! Chirp!”

‘What? Can’t it fly yet?’

The increasingly loud chirping grew distant.

‘Good. I’m exhausted anyway, so if I ignore it, it will handle itself.’

He nonchalantly pressed his face into a pillow and lay down.

“Cheep! Chirp chirp! Chirp…”

‘There you go.’

Although hearing the increasingly feeble chirps pricked his conscience, he pressed his ears to the pillow to block out the sound as much as possible.

However,

“Chirp… Chirp chirp. Chir…uu. Chirururu.”

The sound grew sadder and turned into sobbing whimpers.

Sneaking a glance, he saw the white chick shedding tears like a child who had lost its parents.

‘Is it… is it crying?’

Seeing Ryongi’s face from outside the cradle, the chick fluttered its tiny wings and jumped up and down.

“Chirp! Cheep cheep chirp!”

It was enough to drive him crazy.

Feeling both annoyance and guilt, he finally stood up.

‘This damn bird!’

He placed his foot against the cradle’s edge and glowered at the chick fiercely.

Meanwhile, unaware of the situation, Christina was hastily returning to her lair.

‘I’m running later than I thought.’

Her left wrist balanced a basket full of freshly baked, warm phoenix eggs.

‘I rushed back as fast as I could… What if it’s hungry?’

Remembering the disappointed expression when she mentioned there was no milk, Christina couldn’t help but chuckle.

The shocked face was cuter than expected, and the sulking expression was amusing.

‘It was cute.’

But she quickly rid herself of those thoughts and focused on the chick left alone.

“Baby.”

Hearing a purring sound, she sighed in relief upon entering Ryongi’s room.

Looking around, she saw shattered eggshells scattered around.

‘Looks like it ate all the remaining eggs while waiting and fell asleep.’

Approaching Ryongi, she tilted her head upon seeing a white furball curled up on his head.

“What’s that?”

A white furball that wasn’t there when she left.

With a slightly furrowed brow, she alternated between the sleeping hatchling and the white chick with a single black feather sticking out of its head, both snoring.

“Chirurururu.”

“Ko…oo.”

They were sleeping in complete oblivion, their bellies rising and falling.

Just looking at them could melt one’s heart.

Episode 8: Roasted Egg and Phoenix

Christina glanced between the broken eggshell and the chick and let out a strange exclamation.

‘Could it be… a phoenix egg…?’

Cautiously, Christina brought her hand close to the sleeping chick.

She felt a subtle pure fire magic, intertwined with the power of darkness.

At that moment, the chick suddenly opened its eyes wide.

Flosh.

The white bird standing on the pillow with thin black legs, engulfed itself in flames, its yellow eyes brimming with hostility.

The innocent baby bird that had been with Ryongi was nowhere to be found.

Seeing Christina as an intruder, it fluffed its feathers and glared with sharp eyes full of vigilance.

“Chirp……!”

Intense heat and light began to emanate from its white body.

‘Impressive.’

Backing off slightly, Christina looked at it without reaching out any further.

‘There’s no way it wouldn’t know the aura of a dragon, yet this newborn phoenix chick dares to oppose me to such an extent.’

Divine judgment.

The flame of punishment.

A sacred bird of fire, known to traverse the gardens of gods.

Rarer than a dragon, it is said that only one exists in a generation—a phoenix.

‘However, this generation’s phoenix isn’t imbued solely with pure fire energy; it’s shrouded in darkness.’

She gazed at the black hatchling who was sleeping unaware of the situation.

‘This must definitely be due to the influence of this child.’

In this world, a black dragon’s offspring, once lost to history, had been born, and a phoenix chick, known as the God’s bird, was protecting it.

It felt like catching a glimpse of destiny.

‘A strange feeling. It’s like seeing a cascade in the preordained flow.’

While she was absorbed in that mysterious sense of wonder, the hatchling woke up with a sleepy groan.

Alternately glancing between Christina and the white bird emitting a bright light, he gave the bird a poke with his hand.

“Kyu.”

‘Too noisy.’

“Chirp! Chirururu.”

Rolling weakly to the side and whimpering pitifully, the phoenix chick had now returned to a fluffy white ball without any light.

“Kyu. Kyu-uu.”

‘Don’t be rude to Christina. She’s my benefactor.’

“Chirp chirp…. Chirp.”

The white chick acknowledged this by straightening the single black feather on its head like an antenna before sagging limply as it watched Ryongi’s reaction.

Seeing its obediently sparkling eyes, Ryongi nodded once.

“Kyu kyu.”

‘Good.’

Rewards and punishments should be clear.

Nodding his head, Ryongi gently patted the white chick’s head.

“Chirp chirp! Chirp chirp chirp-!”

The chick, happy in no time, rubbed its head against his.

Then it quickly climbed onto the hatchling’s lap as if asking for more praise.

“Phoot.”
