Shut-in home hero: Chapter 1

My name is Kachikaku Masaru. I’m just your average high school student… or am I? Because I don’t actually go to high school. But it’s not like I’m being bullied or anything. The reason why I stopped going to school… is something I still can’t quite explain to myself.

Originally, I didn’t really like the current social system where humans compete against each other. But just by working hard, my grades naturally improved, so I was relatively good at studying. So I followed my parents’ advice, took an exam, and ended up attending a prestigious private school.

High school life wasn’t that boring. But around halfway through my first year, I suddenly thought to myself: Do I really have to keep fighting for the rest of my life…?

This world is built on competition. Competing in high school exams, university exams, job hunting, then competing within the company… You can’t move up without being in competition forever.

I couldn’t quite digest this obvious fact, so I stopped studying much. And before I knew it, I had stopped going to school. Maybe I was just tired of fighting.

So I dropped out at an appropriate time, got my high school diploma, and was thinking of taking the civil service exam at a decent university where I wouldn’t have to compete as much.

But just like that, my life plan fell apart in an instant.

Because one day, I was suddenly caught up in a class summoning.

“Okay, so all of you in Class 1-1 have been transferred to the Kingdom of Grust through the Hero Summoning Ritual to summon heroes from another world. Do you guys understand the situation so far?”

“Well, somehow.”

Explaining the circumstances that led to the teleportation in front of me is a beautiful blond young man who looks like he’s in his early twenties. His long hair tied up in one is truly beautiful, like a sculpture from the Hellenistic period.

I found myself talking to this boy who coordinates the world, a god, as well. Not the Earth, but the god that controls Aristera, a world of swords and magic that we are being summoned to.

“Oh, if you’d like, have some tea. I made it, after all.”

“S-sure… thank you.”

Around the low table is a vast white space. We each have a cup of warm tea placed in front of us. The tea leaves are standing up in one of the cups. Looking at the other side where the other tea cup is, the tea leaves are also standing.

I continued studying the list of gifts, scrolling through the options. Here are some examples:

– ‘Hero’… Not available
– ‘Overlord’… Not available
– ‘Sword Saint’… Not available
– ‘Wise Man’… Not available

I was shocked to see that these obviously powerful gifts were all marked as unavailable. It was a bit disheartening to see such strong options out of reach.

Just when I started to doubt whether I could find suitable gifts, I came across a hidden gift: ‘Home’. It seems to be a unique and non-replicable gift that only those with strong emotional attachment can manifest.

“Is that your choice?”

“Yes.”

“But… wait—”

I ignored the warning from the god and clicked on the ‘Home’ gift. I didn’t need a powerful gift or to dive into intense battles. With ‘Heroes’, ‘Overlords’, ‘Wise Men’, ‘Sword Saints’, and ‘Holy Women’ already present in my class, I felt like I didn’t need to fight myself. I could leave saving the world to those budding heroes.

I felt a sense of relief just from thinking that. My mood lightened a bit.

But suddenly, my body began to fade, and my senses slowly started to disappear. It must be a sign that the transfer was approaching.

“Oh, come on! It’s quite difficult to manifest a hidden gift! It requires quite a bit of divine power… Well, it can’t be helped after it’s done!”

“I apologize for the inconvenience.”

“It’s fine! I’ll do my best, so you have to save the world with this gift!”

“What…?”

“Hehe, I’ll tell you one thing. The man who manifested this gift before—”

Before I could finish listening to the god’s words, I lost consciousness.
