Episode 2
(Going to Seoul National University)
The living room of the large mansion felt cramped with all of Kim Daehwan’s five sons, two daughters, and grandchildren gathered in one place.
“Now that the fifth child is here, let’s begin,” Kim Daehwan said.
As soon as Kim Daehwan spoke, the voices that were criticizing Kim Woojae just moments ago disappeared.
Everyone in front of the ancestral shrine had solemn expressions, clasped their hands politely, and bowed their heads.
“Darling…”
At that moment, a woman in a white hanbok rushed out in front of the ancestral shrine and knelt down, crying desperately.
“Darling!”
Kim Gyeongjae, the second son of Kim Daehwan, who was about to place a wine glass in front of the ancestral shrine, looked at the crying woman and the young women who were wearing the same white hanbok.
The two young women approached the crying woman from both sides.
“Mother, please calm down.”
“Mother, please get up.”
The two daughters came forward and helped the woman stand up.
Then, they stood on either side of her and shed tears together.
The woman was Kim Seokho’s grandmother and Kim Daehwan’s wife.
Kim Seokho looked alternately at his grandmother, who had passed away, her daughters, and the photo on the ancestral shrine.
“Grandfather, aunties, and grandmother…”
Today was the memorial day for Kim Seokho’s grandfather, who was also Kim Daehwan’s eldest son.
Kim Daehwan’s eldest son had passed away in a car accident three years ago and had become famous in his own right.
He was the heir and successor of Taeyang Group, and he had been in charge of Taeyang Construction, a core part of the group that moved the entire Taeyang Group.
“After my grandfather passed away… it all started.”
Kim Seokho looked around the heavy and stuffy room.
When Kim Daehwan’s eldest son was alive, his other siblings did not covet Taeyang Group.
This was because he had laid the foundation for the current Taeyang Group and was one of the key figures who ran the entire group.
So, his siblings only aimed for the crumbs that would be left after the group inheritance.
If they had a chance, they would grab one of the group’s subsidiaries, and if that wasn’t possible, their maximum size of ambition was to supply products to the group as primary cooperative companies.
However, after the firm successor suddenly passed away, the greed began to rise in the eyes of those who had given up.
And there was someone behind them, pushing them forward to strengthen that greed.
“Tsk, stop it already. Just because you hold a memorial for a long time doesn’t mean the dead will come back to life… Have your last drink and go home. We all have to go to work tomorrow.”
As people dressed in black and white gathered, someone wearing a hanbok with pink flower patterns appeared.
“Grandmother…”
Kim Daehwan’s wife and the nominal mother of his children, Jo Yangsook, entered the living room.
“It’s already past one o’clock.”
“But, mother…”
“But? What do you mean by ‘but’? Aren’t you going to work tomorrow? Your father also needs to rest, so stop messing around.”
Jo Yangsook frowned as she looked at the ancestral shrine, as if she didn’t like it.
Then, she personally called the housekeepers and told them to clear away the memorial food.
Kim Woojae and his siblings silently watched Jo Yangsook’s actions.
Only Kim Daehwan’s deceased eldest son’s wife continued to sob as if she were grief-stricken.
Jo Yangsook seemed to dislike even the sound of her crying, so she waved her hand and said to her daughters who were standing on both sides.
“Take your mother and leave.”
