The Shapeshifter Academy: Chapter 5

“I’m going to get caught by my father!” Moni whispered urgently, grabbing my wrist and pulling me along.

As we entered the cabin, a pair of eyes gleamed in the darkness.

“What, what is it?” I asked.

Thump thump, and finally a majestic brown deer walked out, parting the darkness.

I took a step back, feeling slightly intimidated by the deer’s presence.

“Is this a deer?” I asked.

“Of course. It’s our house’s deer farm!” Moni replied.

“….It’s really a deer?” I asked again.

“Bendy, right? You know that, right? He’s a pack-carrying deer named Happy,” Moni explained.

The name seemed very different from its appearance.

The deer snorted as if it had read my thoughts or something, emitting a fierce breath.

“See that? Happy is always in a bad mood,” Moni said.

“Maybe it’s because the name doesn’t suit it?” I suggested.

“Well, maybe. Anyway, because we don’t listen to it, Father will soon sell him,” Moni explained candidly, with a determined expression as she handed over the saddle. It was a bizarre expression that didn’t suit the little one.

“So we’re going to run away on Happy, far away,” Moni said.

“Ride on it?” I asked.

As I held onto the saddle as if it were a lifeline, I hesitated for a moment.

“Far away….”

I wanted to hide at least until the betrothal was canceled.

“The territory of herbivorous merfolk is highly likely to be exposed soon.”

Lost in my thoughts, I took out a crumpled document from my pocket.

[Recruitment Requirements for Shapeshifter Academy Freshmen]

A promotional poster that I found on a bulletin board in a corner of the urban area a while ago. I impulsively took it down.

A place that father’s eyes couldn’t reach.

The deer territory, the farthest place from Petrium.

A place that my father couldn’t even imagine me being.

“If it’s a place like that….”

The territory of carnivorous merfolk. It was the only place that existed.

“Do you know where to go?” Moni asked anxiously.

In response to Moni’s pleas, I closed my eyes slowly and nodded.

“Anywhere will do.”

If it was the territory of carnivorous merfolk, even if it was the most dangerous place, I could guarantee my safety.

“Bendy.”

Moni clenched my fur tightly.

“Don’t die.”

I bit my lip to suppress laughter, as my face crumpled from holding back the laugh. It was inappropriate for such a serious atmosphere.

I bent down and pinched Moni’s cheek, which was slightly swollen.

“Why would I die?”

“Because Father, ugh, should not catch you.”

“I can’t disobey the commander’s orders,” I said.

I hugged Moni tightly.

“I’ll write a letter. Can you say goodbye to the soldiers for me?”

Reluctantly, Moni just nodded her head, suppressing her tears.

With a smile, I gently patted Moni’s bird’s nest-like hair.

She was a precious friend. After my parents disappeared, she and the other children filled the empty streets of Petrium for me.

Perhaps they filled not the empty streets, but the void in my heart.

“Thank you, Moni.”

Finally, I hugged Moni tightly one last time and stood up.

“Goodbye.”

It was finally farewell. I was ready to face the wind of a new beginning as I hopped onto Happy’s back.

“Ah!”

And I was thrown off by Happy’s sudden bucking, rolling on top of a patch of grass.

Bounce, bounce.

The Shapeshifter Academy

The Shapeshifter Academy

The Shapeshifter Academy, where only carnivore shapeshifters attend.

If there is only one exception in that place,

“…I don’t taste good.”

It was me, the herbivore deer, Bendy Reppy.

I planned to quietly endure until graduation by hiding the fact that I’m a deer, pretending to be a fox, but.

“This year’s student council president is, Bendy Reppy.”

Ah.

No matter how I see it, I think it’s hopeless to graduate quietly.

Hiding my identity, avoiding the carnivore shapeshifters’ fangs, and even doing the Student Council President’s work, I’m so busy to death, but,

“Now, I think it would be a bit of a bummer if the President dies.”

I ended up getting involved with the fool white tiger, who’s crazy,

“It wasn’t long ago when I act annoyingly, saying that I’ll prey on you.”

The troublemaker wolf who feeds off of his own pride,

“Touch me.”

And even a real lion who abruptly asks me to touch him.

The Shapeshifter Academy in which they say that herbivore shapeshifters can’t survive.

“President, you look exactly like that.”

“….”

“A deer.”

I, surely should be able to graduate without getting caught, right?
